My story
By Vera Brown
A letter being posted

My name is Vera. My story is about when I went to college. It was the worst day of my life but it was worth it.

It all began when my son came home from school one day with a letter from his teacher and I could not read it. I was so digusted with myself that I went to my local college to see if they could help me.

I met Ann. She was a basic skills teacher. I was terrified but she made me feel good and relaxed. She said that she would help me and she did.

It was a long struggle but it was worth it in the end. Now I can read a book. It was like opening a new window of life for me. I have a lot of confidence now.

So if I can do it, so can you. Please go to your local college and see how interesting it can be. It is not like school. I did not realise that there were a lot of people like me and I made a lot of friends.

I still need a little bit of help. Every time I go to college, I learn a lot more about everyday things, which I can now explain to other people.

My son says that I did well as I can read all his letters now. Thanks to all.

Vera is a bubbly lady with a very nice husband and a lovable grown up son. She has been a Basic Skills student at Halton College in Cheshire for two years. Vera is now a lot happier with more friends and lots of confidence.

Has college made you more confident? Let us know how.
