Using tally charts with money
Session:  Week No:

Objectives: 
To use money confidently in practical situations.
All will add up numbers from a tally. Some will use a calculator. Some will use mental maths.
All will use addition. Some will do subtraction. Some will understand concept of multiplication of money.
Materials: 
Blank tally charts, shop price list, calculators.

Introduction
 
Registration and introduction to session.
Discuss use of a tally for a shop to highlight practical use of graphs and charts.
Explain what the session involves.

Revise use of the @ sign in e.g.
10 mars@30p means 10 times 30p
Handout tally's and shop prices. Get into groups or pairs. Each group to add up a different tally e.g. chocolate, drinks, crisps, etc.
 
Work in pairs or groups.
 
Tally charts.

Revise how to break long sums down and decimal place.

Add up totals to find out how much money was taken. Check answers with calculator.
Extension: when amounts have been found work out the sums of cost price and subtract to find total profit.
