The internet has become an integral part of learning for tutors and adult learners across the UK, with libraries, colleges and internet cafes all providing access to learning resources. For many tutors and teachers who are pressed for time, the internet allows them to teach ‘interactively’ and use more dynamic content with their learners. For many tutors, having access to internet resources helps with their teaching. Here at Skillswise we often hear, through feedback, that quizzes and games do make learning more fun and engaging with learners. We also hear from tutors who do not have access to the internet and have to find ways around this. This month, Skillswise went to find out how tutors who do not use the internet with their learners, teach basic skills.

Tim Whitaker is the Training Officer for on-board Services for P & O Ferries, crossing the Channel from Dover to Calais. "Everyone on board from stewards to managers is involved in training and encouraged to continue with their own ongoing personal development. A ferry is a challenging workplace for a trainer and coach as there is a wide range of occupations to cater for. Under the heading of On-Board Services are: Administration, Bars, Banking, Galleys, Restaurants, Retail, Stores and Support Services."

Tim supports a variety of staff through training, from new starters during initial training to overseeing all the 'in-house' training programmes for stewards, stewardesses and managers. Tim has no internet access on board P & O Ferries, but uses the Skillswise CD ROM and the Skillswise magazine in conjunction with his training programmes. "I use Skillswise because the staff like it and find it to be a beneficial tool to support their learning and development."
