Compare and order fractions using a fraction wall

You can use a fraction wall to compare common fractions. The fraction wall from Factsheet 2 goes down to The fraction 1 over 12.. Using the fraction wall you can compare fractions.

Example Which is larger The fraction 3 over 4. or The fraction 3 over 5.?

three quarters and three  fifths

You can see that The fraction 3 over 4. is larger than The fraction 3 over 5.

Example Which is larger The fraction 3 over 8. or The fraction 2 over 10.?

three eighths and two tenths

You can see that The fraction 3 over 8. is larger than The fraction 2 over 10.

Example Use the fraction wall to compare the following fractions
The fraction 2 over 3. and The fraction 3 over 4.

two thirds and three  quarters

The answer is that The fraction 3 over 4. is larger than The fraction 2 over 3.

Example Which of the following fractions are larger than The fraction 1 over 2.?
      The fraction 2 over 5.    The fraction 2 over 3.    The fraction 7 over 10.    The fraction 4 over 8.

two thirds, two fifths, seven tenths and 4 eighths

You can see that The fraction 2 over 3. and The fraction 7 over 10. are both larger than The fraction 1 over 2.
But The fraction 2 over 5. is less than The fraction 1 over 2.
And if you look closely you can see that The fraction 4 over 8. is the same as The fraction 1 over 2.
