Changing decimals to fractions

A decimal can be written as a fraction using the place value table.

The number 0.2 can be put in this table to show the value of each figure

0.2 and place value

The figure 2 represents 2 tenths. This written as a fraction is The fraction 2 over 10..
This can be simplified to The fraction 1 over 5.   So 0.2 = The fraction 1 over 5.

Now look at a number which has two figures after the decimal point as in 0.25

0.25 and place value

The figure 5 represents 5 hundredths. This written as a fraction isThe fraction 5 over 100.
0.25 = The fraction 2 over 10. + The fraction 5 over 100. = The fraction 20 over 100. + The fraction 5 over 100. = The fraction 25 over 100.
The fraction 25 over 100. can be simplified to The fraction 1 over 4.
So 0.25 = The fraction 1 over 4.

If a number has three figures after the decimal point, such as 0.125

0.125 and place value

The figure 5 represents 5 thousandths. This written as a fraction isThe fraction 5 over 1000.
0.125 = The fraction 1 over 10. + The fraction 2 over 100. + The fraction 5 over 1000.
This is the same as The fraction 100 over 1000. + The fraction 20 over 1000. + The fraction 5 over 1000. = The fraction 125 over 1000.
The fraction 125 over 1000. can be simplified to The fraction 1 over 8.
So 0.125 = The fraction 1 over 8.

Top tip!
Here's a quick method for changing decimals to fractions.
Look at the decimal and work out which number has the smallest value. For example in the decimal 0.75 the number 5 has the smallest value as The fraction 5 over 100.. Write the decimal over hundredths:
0.75 = The fraction 75 over 100. which can be simplified to The fraction 3 over 4.

Here's another example. With the decimal 0.375 the number 5 has the smallest value as The fraction 5 over 1000.. Write the decimal over thousandths:
0.375 = The fraction 375 over 1000. which can be simplified to The fraction 3 over 8.
