Australia have competed in every Commonwealth Games that there has been and are top of the all-time medal table with 1,476 in total – 564 of those being gold.

Over half have come in two disciplines – swimming and athletics – but cycling and weightlifting are also traditionally strong events.

A team of 320 collected 198 medals in Kuala Lumpur, striking gold 80 times.

Melbourne will host the 2006 Games, the fourth time they have been held in Australia and the first time since 1982, when a 13ft-tall winking mechanical kangaroo called Matilda was the star of the opening ceremony.
