Who's it for?

The Skillswise website has been developed with and for adults studying Level One of the Basic Skills literacy and numeracy standards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (For more information about the curriculums visit the 'Read, Write, Plus' website; for information on using Skillswise in Scotland, please visit our Scotland page.)

That's not to say that students of other levels won't be able to use the resources. For example, the ' Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check' game is very popular amongst Entry Level students. The 'Silent Invaders', and 'Homophones' games can also work well with lower level learners.

In numeracy the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division modules contain a lot of material suitable for Entry Level students.

'Your stories' is a monthly magazine containing short stories, poems and reports from ALL levels of basic skills students.

You can also find FREE lesson plans, worksheets and activities for Entry level students submitted by tutors across the UK in the 'Lesson plans' section of the Tutor centre:

We've also a strong 'English as a Foreign Language' user base.

In fact, the site is suitable for any adult who wants to improve their reading, writing and maths skills. If you want to brush up on your punctuation, or you want to find out how to work out the percentage of your pay rise, you should find it here. Just remember, the materials are designed to be a resource, not a course. So dip in and take what you need.

This site also provides curriculum resources for basic skills tutors and a resources area, the Tutor Centre, where tutors can share good ideas and seek inspiration. Just look for the 'T' button in the top banner on all pages of the site.
