Their japes revolve around daredevil stunts aimed at wooing their lady friends - especially Norah Batty (Kathy Staff) - or getting male chums out of trouble.

The League of GentlemenThe northern town of Royston Vasey is a dour, frightening place where dark, perverted and horrifying things happen behind closed doors. The Likely Lads / Whatever Happened to...Terry Collier (James Bolam) and Bob Ferris (Rodney Bewes) are working class mates in Newcastle, drinking, chatting up women and getting by. After Terry joins the army for six years Bob gets a job and a girl, setting the scene for more comedy in 'Whatever Happened to...'.

Liver Birds, The (BBC, 1969-1978 +1996, 87 episodes)
The Liver BirdsThe exploits of two young female friends (Pauline Collins & Polly James - later Nerys Hughes & Elizabeth Estensen) in Liverpool was the premise for this classic sitcom. Partying, boyfriends, jobs, lack of money, and family were the main themes, and much of the action took place in the girls' flat in Huskisson Street.

Love Thy NeighbourEddie Booth (Jack Smethurst) is a staunch Union Jack-waving Socialist, living with wife Joan (Kate Williams) in Maple Terrace. Bill (Rudolph Walker) and Barbie (Nina Baden-Semper) move in next door, and - horror of horrors - are West Indian. The comedy centred on the resulting culture clash and racism.
