"'The Good Life' opened the British public's eyes to four
of our greatest acting talents and established them as linchpins
of the British sitcom scene".
"It proved that you could set a sitcom amongst the British
upper middle classes with a witty, wordy and gentle script and still
pull in twenty million viewers".
"It gave the world Margot Leadbetter, put Surbiton on the
map, introduced the idea of downshifting to British public, and
was suitable viewing for all the family".
"It married the writing genius of Esmond and Larbey with the
producing talent of John Howard Davies who all went on to bring
us some of the UK's most popular sitcoms ('To the Manor Born', 'Brush
Strokes' etc). It was 'The Good Life' that started the ball rolling".
"Felicity Kendal - her face smudged with dirt - donning dungarees
and wellies and launching a million sexual fantasies - she was voted
Rear of the Year in 1981".
"And most of all, perhaps, the show knew when to bow out.
After only 4 series - 30 shows - the writers and actors decided
that they had taken it as far as they could. Many other sitcoms
could learn a valuable lesson"!
