Sachin inspiration for youngsters - Arjuna

Tendulkar also holds the record for scoring the most Test and one-day runs
Tributes are pouring in from players and fans alike for Sachin Tendulkar after reaching his record 100th ton in international cricket.

Sri Lanka’s world cup winning captain says Sachin is an inspiration for the youngsters.

“Tendulkar’s tremendous achievements are a tribute to his commitment to the game of cricket,” Arjuna Ranatunga told BBC Sinhala service, Sandeshaya.

The basting maestro became the first player to score 100 international centuries by compiling a ton in a one-day international game against Bangladesh in Dhaka.

The landmark century is his 49th in one-day cricket.

'Role-model'

Tendulkar had twice been out in the 90s after scoring his 99th century against South Africa in March 2011.

I hope and pray that he will continue playing Test cricket for some more years because we need players like Tendulkar to continue playing in the longer version for this game going

Ranatunga, a strong critic of the shortest version of the game also paid tribute to Tendulkar’s decision to stay away from Twenty20 games including highly lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).

“Everyone knows Twenty20 is a money factor but still he took a decision to play longer version and one-day cricket which is a very good lesson for some of the young cricketers present,” said Ranatunga, currently an opposition MP.

Paying tribute to the Indian batsman’s determination to stay in the game for over 20 years, Ranatunga said it will be extremely difficult to beat the landmark achievement.

“He is a big role model for the entire cricketing world,” said Ranatunga.

“I hope and pray that he will continue playing Test cricket for some more years because we need players like Tendulkar to continue playing in the longer version for this game going.”
