Minister, IGP summoned to court

The Appeal Court in Sri Lanka has issued notice to media minister, police chief and Jaffna military commander to appear before
the court in connection with the disappearance of two human rights activists.
The court issued the order after granting leave to proceed to a petition seeking an order to present Lalith Kumara Weeraraju and Kugan Murugananthan who disappeared in Jaffna on 09 December. Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, IGP NK Ilangakoon and Security Force Commander in north Maj Gen Mahinda Hathurusinghe were ordered to appear before the court and explain. The two activists of Jana Aragala (Peoples’ Struggle) movement affiliated to Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna were in Jaffna to organise an even relarted to International Human Rights Day. Nuwan Bopage, the counsel appearing for the relatives of the disappeared told BBC Sandeshaya that the government media spokesman has publicly stated that the two activists were arrested by the state. "But the relatives of the two activists are so far not informed of their whereabouts," he added. Police later said they found the motorcycle in which two activists travelled. The hearing has been postponed until 15 February. |
