Family says President Rajapaksa failed to fulfil his pledges

Madhushan Ratnasekara, the elder brother of the Roshen Shanaka told BBC Sandeshaya that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has failed to keep his word on compensation as well as bringing the perpetrators of the crime to justice.

"The President told us that the perpetrators will be brought to justice. It has been seven months but nothing has been fulfilled," he said.

Roshen Shanaka who received gunshot wounds at a protest by Free Trade Zone (FTZ) workers against the private sector pension bill in June, last year, later died in the hospital.

The police chief, Mahinda Balasuriya, rendered his resignation after the police attack on protesters led to more protests.

The government was forced to withdraw the bill after continuous protests by private sector workers.

On Sunday, the family launched a monthly vigil at the FTZ together with other organisations and religious leaders.

Family members of other victims of the police attack have also joined the vigil.

The community and religious leaders who took part in the vigil also accused the government of trying to re-introduce the private sector pension bill that led to mass protests by FTZ and other workers.

The protesters said the vigil will be continued every month at the FTZ.
