Buddhist leaders call Ranil to step down

The foremost buddhist leadership in Sri Lanka have called upon the leader of the main opposition, Ranil Wickremesinghe to
step down from the party leadership.
"It is advisable to continue as the leader of the opposition while making Mr. Karu Jayasuriya the party leader for the benefit of the party", said the Mahanayaka Theras of the leading buddhist chapters in a letter addressed to Mr.Ranil Wickremasinghe. It was signed by the Ven. Tibbotuwave Sumangala Mahanayaka Thera of the Malwatta Chapter, the Ven. Udugama Buddharakkitha Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, the Ven Weweldeniye Medhalankara Mahanayaka Thera of the Ramanna Nikaya and the Ven. Davuldena Gnanisssara Mahanayaka Thera of the Amerapura Maha Nikaya. The Maha Nayaka Theras state that the United National Party is a party that has 'rendered a considerable service to the country and it would be an impediment for its future if continued to work as a divided party. After a prolonged crisis in the party, co-deputy leader of the United National Party Karu Jayasuriya announced last week that he would contest for the party leadership. Following this public statement, he met with the Mahanayka Theras on Tuesday for consultations and had their blessings. |
