The voters of Nawalapitiya, in the hill country will be returning to the polling station within less than two weeks time.

As the commissioner of elections annulled the election results due to wide spread election violence the voters will receive another opportunity to cast their votes on Tuesday the 20th of April.

Voters of thirty six election divisions in the Nawalapitiya electorate are being canvassed for Tuesdays’ polls.

Politicians moving around the city in fleets of vehicles are making last minute moves in search of preferential votes and Nawalapityia is turning in to hub of activity.

Fear and Anxiety

The city centre is busy with election campaigning but all around there is a degree of fear and anxiety. People are reluctant to talk to the media. Security forcers are patrolling even the tiny villages around the outskirts of Nawalapitiya.

Prominent candidates are accompanied by armed security patrols.

In comparison to the previous election the number of cut outs and posters are less and the Elephant symbol of the main opposition is hardly to be seen.

Mahindananda Aluthgamage the chief organizer of the ruling party has been blamed by many for the violence and he in turn blames others of his own party

Aluthgamage hits out at leading candidates of his own party who crossed over from the opposition labelling them as ‘traitoers’.

The controversial Aluthgamage says that there was a coup against him from within the party.

The Head Quarters Inspector of the Nawalapitiya police station, Udaya Wicramasekara declined comenting on the polls that had been annulled.

As Wickramasekara was outlining his security plan for the up coming elections a group of UNP supporters from the opposition walked in complaining that they had been attacked by rulling party supporters.
