'Action' against religious attackers

Sri Lanka Supreme Court
AG says disciplinary action is taken against the police for inaction
The Attorney General (AG) in Sri Lanka has informed the Supreme Court that disciplinary action has been launched against a group of police officers for failing to investigate an attack on a Christian devotee.

The AG was responding to a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition field by Pradeep Sanajana Kumara, a resident of Kirindiwela, Gampaha district.

The petitioner has accused the police of failing to take action against a group that attacked his house accusing him of maintaining a prayer centre for Christian devotees.

In his petition Pradeep Sanajana Kumara says that he bought to house in Kirindiwela and being a Christian devotee, regularly prayed at his home.

But a group of villagers have attacked his house accusing him of maintaining a prayer centre.

Although he provided the details of the attackers, the petitioner says, the police failed to take any action against them.

He seeks a ruling by the court that his right to religion is violated by the police inaction.

The AG has also informed the Supreme Court that steps are underway to file charges against the attackers.
