DNA oppose Ban ki Moon's panel

The opposition party in Sri Lanka led by the former army chief has voiced strong objections against the proposed UN advisory
panel on Sri Lanka.
The Democratic National Alliance (DNA) said it opposed moves by UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon to appoint a team to advice him on human rights situation in Sri Lanka. Mr Ban plans to ask a panel of experts to advise the UN on "accountability issues" relating to possible human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. Human rights groups want some sort of accountability for abuses alleged to have been committed during the war against Tamil Tigers. The Sri Lankan government insists it did nothing wrong. War crimes tribunal However, former military commander, Gen Sarath Fonseka, who is the leader of the newly formed DNA on the day he was arrested told journalists in Colombo that he is prepared to give evidence on war crime charges against Sri Lanka.
General Fonseka, The defeated candidate in Sri Lanka's presidential election, arrested in early February is awaiting a military trial on charges of participating in politics while in uniform and violating military procurement procedures. The opposition Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is the main party contesting from the DNA at the April 8th general election. DNA General Secreatary Vijitha Herath told journalists that the party does not approve any intervention by the United Nations on Sri Lanka's sovereignty. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has also denounced plans by UN chief Ban Ki-Moon. Mr Rajapaksa has told Mr Ban the move was "uncalled for and unwarranted". |
