MTV attackers 'chased away'

A group of attackers came in buses and vans to attack a private media station in Colombo were chased away, officials at the
station said.
Suranga Senanayake, News Manager of Sirasa FM told journalists that several workers at the station sustained injuries at the attack. Sunil Jayasekara, Secretary of Free Media Movement (FMM) said the attackers have tried to do a considerable damage to Sirasa/ MTV station's Colombo office in Baybrooke Avenue. "The police have initially failed to take any action but were also attacked when tried to intervene," he told BBC Sandeshaya. BBC’s Charles Haviland who visited the scene says that the outer building housing the Maharaja organisation has come under attack and many windows were broken and plant pots smashed in the front yard. The protestors have failed to get into the inner building housing the television station. Police spokesman, SSP Prishantha Jayakody told BBC Sandeshaya that 16 suspects have already been arrested and investigations are continued. |
