The Indian government says it is working with the Sri Lankan government to work out a political solution for the island nation.
Newly appointed National Security Advisor, Shiv Shankar Menon told journalist in Chennai that he discussed the plight of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka with Tamilnadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi. “We are working with the Sri Lankan government both in terms of resettlement of displaced persons and also in terms of the devolution of power in the political arrangements that would satisfy all communities in Sri Lanka,” he said. The chief minister has also expressed Tamil Nadu’s concern over Indian fishermen and what he termed as “their treatment in Sri Lanka.” Mr. Menon who was India’s Foreign Secretary until recently says that he assured the Tamilnadu government that India will “continue to do whatever it can” to assure the safety of Indian fishermen and bringing in a political solution for the island’s national question. In his first visit after assuming the office, the new National Security Advisor has on Sunday paid a courtesy call to Mr.
Karunanidhi. |
