Christian activist granted bail

A court in Sri Lanka has granted bail to a Christian rights activist who was detained under touch anti-terror laws.
The Colombo magistrate granted bail to Mr. Shantha Fernando, the executive secretary for justice and peace of the National Christian Council, after the Attorney General (AG) raised no objections. The human rights activist was arrested on 27 March at Katunayake airport and detained under Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) on his way to Delhi, India for an international conference. He was accused of possessing material, including a CD, that contains anti-government information. Mr. Fernando was granted bail on two sureties of 200,000 each. He was ordered to report to the police on the last Sunday of
every month and give his passport number to the courts. |
