First medal for Sri Lanka in China

Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Wijekoon secures the first medal for his country in the ongoing eighteenth Asian Athletic Championships
being held in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
Wijekoon won a Silver medal in the men’s 1500 meters competition on Wednesday. He clocked a timing of three minutes 47.01 seconds to secure the second place. The gold medal in this event was won by Shaween of Saudi Arabia while the bronze went to Chatholi Hamza of India. Wijekoon was in contention of the gold medal running neck to neck with the gold medallist who overtook the lankan during the last few meters. The event was hotly contested even in the absence of athletes from Qatar in this category. Of late many athletes of African origin have represented the state of Qatar offering them short term citizenship. Chaminda Wijekoon, 28, has a personal best of 3 minutes 43.80 seconds. Sri Lanka's Prasanna Amarasekara had won the gold medal in the 400 meters for men at the last edition in Jordan. Susanthika jayasinghe who has retired from athletics also had won two medals in Jordan. At the end of day two of the five day competition china leads the medals tally 19 medals including 8 gold medals. The competition which opened on the 10 November concludes on the 15 of November. |
