| French human rights envoy, Francois Zimeray |
A senior human rights envoy from France has asked Sri Lanka to end a state of emergency.
After a three-day visit to the island nation, the envoy, Francois Zimeray said the end of the conflict between the government
and the Tamil Tigers, six months ago, should be an opportunity to lift emergency laws.
He also urged the government to investigate alleged war crimes in the final stages of the fighting.
The Sri Lankan military declared victory over the rebels in May this year.
Emergency regulations have been in force in Sri Lanka for most of the last twenty-six years.
