Sri Lanka's veteran opening bowler Chaminda Vaas says he is happy to be back in the Test team after the recent controversy
over his retirement from Test cricket.
"I had no intention of retiring," he told BBC Sinhala service. Sri Lanka's chief selector Asantha De Mel has earlier told media that the veteran bowler had informed him of the intention to retire from Test cricket. Vaas was not selected for the first and second Tests against Pakistan that will be played in Colombo from Monday. However, Sri Lanka Cricket announced on Friday that he was included in the 15-man squad for the third Test. New talent "There was an incident. I actually don't want to talk about it now," Vaas said. "We - selectors and the board - had a discussion. There have been misunderstandings. Now I am happy to be back in the side and I will try to give my best for the team and the country".
The selectors, who were accused by the media of trying to sideline Thilakaratne Dilshan by not appointing him as the vice captain in the absence of Muttiah Muralitharan, have also named former skipper Mahela Jayawardena as Sangakkara's deputy for the third Test. Sri Lanka has already won the series by defeating the Pakistan side in both Test matches. Chaminda Vaas is of the opinion that the cricket authorities should maintain a two-pronged approach to develop the game in the island nation. "The youngsters are getting more chances right now," he said, "but you need to groom the youngsters together with the seniors." "A good young talent is emerging now, but it won't be long term unless you keep the seniors and interact and work hard with the youngsters," Chaminda Vaas said. Vaas, Sri Lanka's finest ever bowler after Muralitharan, says he is available for selection for all forms of the game, including Twenty20. A member of the team that won the world title for Sri Lanka in 1996, he earlier told BBC Sandeshaya that he intends to play
until the next world cup in 2011. |
