Court questions as to why some families are detained in camps
The Supreme Court in Sri Lanka on Friday ordered the Attorney General to take measures to provide medical treatment to a child from one of the camps in the island's north.

The Court ordered the Attorney General (AG) to allow a 13-year old girl with shell attack injuries to see the specialist doctor in Anuradhapura hospital.

The order was made after considering a petition by four members of an Internally Displaced (IDP) family seeking their release from the Cyver Prakash camp in Vavuniya.

When questioned by Judge Nimal Gamini Amarathunga whether the family has committed any criminal offence, the state counsel responded in the negative.

CPA petition

The Supreme Court then questioned as to why the authorities do not take steps to release the family out of detention through the magistrates' court.

The state counsel was ordered to explain the further action when the case is once again taken for hearing on 20 July.

Meanwhile, the AG was ordered to file objections, if any, against a petition seeking the release of IDPs in Vavuniya camps on 06 August.

The petition is filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA).

Justice Amarathunga noted that some information filed by the CPA using websites included baseless information.

The counsel for the CPA, responding, said the petitioners were not able to find independent information as visits to the camps are restricted by the authorities.

The state counsel informed the courts that nearly 8600 elderly people have already been released from the camps.
