Weapons were handed over to Police
Weapons were handed over via Muslim Mosque Association
Arms groups in Kathankudi, Batticaloa have handed their weapons to the authorities on Saturday.

Through the Association of Muslim Mosques in the Eastern Province illegal weapons were handed over to the police at a ceremony held at Meera Jumma Mosque in Kanthankudi.

An amnesty given by the police to handover all illegal weapons in Eastern Province ended on Saturday.

T56, SMG, 303 rifles and shot guns were among the weapons.

Receiving the weapons DIG eastern province Edison Gunatilake described the event ‘historic” and, requested the people to encourage handing over of the rest.

600 guns

Minister of Health, Eastern province M. L. A. M. Hisbullah said that he personally distributed 600 weapons to villagers so that they would use them to defend the Muslims from Tamil Tigers.

According to the Minister weapons were given to him by the late President R.Premadasa.

They were distributed a day after the massacre of Kathankudi in August 1990.

“We never kept these weapons to fight the security forces. We used them to fight against the Tamil Tigers”, Minister Hisbullah said.
