Prison officers 'in contempt of court'

Sri Lanka judiciary
A suspect was transferred to the hospital without seeking court approval
The Kantale magistrate has accused two senior prison officers of contempt of court for failing to bring a suspect to courts for two consecutive days.

Magistrate Thilina Gamage said Assistant Superintendant of Trincomalee and Superintendant of Anuradhapura prisons have committed a serious offence by failing to obey court orders.

He ordered them to personally appear in court on 09 January for explanation.

They are also accused of admitting the suspect to Trincomalee and Colombo hospitals without seeking prior approval from the judiciary.

Misuse of public funds

The accusations were levelled as they failed to produce Selliah Prakash, Director of Agro Trading Lanka Company who is under custodial arrest for misusing public property.

Authorities were also ordered to provide a medical report on Mr. Selliah's medical condition.

He was arrested on 07 December by the police Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Selliah Prakash is accused of not paying the monies due and issuing an invalid cheque for nearly eleven million rupees to Kantale Corn Project of National Livestock Board (NLB).

He has promised to pay the said amount through Lanka Putra Development Bank for corn seeds he has bought from the NLB.
