Government supporters protested near the Parliamant on Thursday against Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe.
A large number of supporters of the government participated in the protest calling Wickremasinghe "a traitor". The protest was organised to coincide with the opening of parliament after the prorogation. They carried placards of Ranil Wicremasinghe, and various caricatures of LTTE leader Velupilai Prabhakaran. The government prorogated the Parliament on the sixth of May. Protesters accused United National Party leader Wickremasinghe of betraying the country to the LTTE and "foreign invaders".
The Chairman of the Kaduwela Pradesheeya Sabha, D.H.Buddhadasa who participated in the protest said that Ranil, Prabha and Rauf have joined together to carry out a campaign to damage the image of Sri Lanka. "Opposition leader do not have any interest in the country. His only interest is to become the president of the country", Buddhadasa said. The protesters later tried to push through the parliament gates. Police intervened to stop the protesters from entering the parliamentary complex by force |
