JVP legislators' vehicles 'stolen'

The dissident group of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says a another JVP legislator has stolen their vehicles at the parliament.

Kalutara district JVP parliamentarian Piyasiri Wijenayake told BBC Sandeshaya that his official vehicle, a Toyota Double Cab, was forcefully removed by a group led by Trncomalee distrcit MP, Jayanatha Wijesekara.

The group who has assaulted the policeman in duty has also taken dissident MP Achala Suranga Jagoda's Toyaota van on Wednesday, he added.

The MP was informed by the police that the police officer was admitted to the hospital.

The vehicles were left parked at the MPs' garage in parliament, Piyasiri Wijenayake said, as the dissident group left for a press conference after a special speach by JVP parliamentary group leader, Wimal Weerawansa.

Ten JVP legislators, including Wijenayake and Jagoda, expressed support for the parliamentary group leader at the press briefing on Tuesday.

Anuradhapura district MP Ranaweera Pathirana, who pretended to be a suppor of the dissident group, said nobody shoul be allowed to divide the party and problems should be resolved within.

The vehicle of another dissident lawmaker, Matale district MP Sujatha Alahakoon, has gone missing with the driver from the parliament's garage on Tuesday evening, MP Wijenayake added.

The MP has lodged complaints with the Speaker, parliament's Secretary General and the Welikada police.

Speaker WJM Lokubandara told BBC Sandeshaya that he ordered police to launch an investigation after MP Wijenayake made a complaint.

However, he did not accuse MP Wijesekara of any involvement in the incident, the Speaker added.

Sandeshaya could not contact Jayantha Wijesekara, MP, despite repeated attempts.
