Sri Lankan paramilitary leader Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, better known as Colonel Karuna, is appearing at Isleworth Crown
Court in West London on Friday for sentencing.
He's already pleaded guilty to a criminal offence under the ID cards act for possessing a false passport. BBC correspondants say that it’s unclear whether Karuna will get a custodial sentence. The maximum possible is 24 months. Equally he could just get a fine. Amnesty International and other human rights groups are still trying to persuade the UK authorities that there's a case to answer on torture and war crimes. Asylum Karuna is believed to have lodged an asylum claim in the UK. If Karuna does not get a custodial sentence, he might withdraw his asylum claim and agree to leave the UK voluntarily. In that case, the window of opportunity to pursue other claims against him here would be very small. This is an immediate concern of human rights groups. However, he could remain in immigration custody anyway until there's an outcome on his asylum application that's being processed. |
