Rupavahini 'bans' teledrama
Media watchdogs in Sri Lanka have Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) authorities for banning a Sinhala teledrama The Free Media Movement said the SLRC has stopped telecasting of Sudu Kapuru Pethi last week without prior explanation. “This censorship highlights the negative impact of Government political control of what should be an independent public broadcaster capable of reflecting the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan society,” a FMM statement stated. Set upon the ongoing conflict between the Sri Lankan government forces and the Tamil Tigers, the teledrama was produced by award winning dramatist, Athula Peiris. The FMM said it has learnt that the state-run SLRC has decided to censor the drama because it discussed plight of the Tamils during the war situation. “By censoring without the knowledge of the producer the dialogue " Jaffna Tears is cold as tears in Hambantota" in the last episode shown on SLRC shows the level of censorship considered acceptable in the national broadcaster,” the FMM said. The watchdogs urged the SLRC remove the ban on Sudu Kapuru Pethi.
