Fourth day of Sri Lankan air raids

The Sri Lankan air force has continued to bomb Tamil Tiger positions in the north-east of the country for a fourth day.

The Tigers say eight of their fighters were killed in the air raids in the districts of Batticaloa and Trincomalee.

The Sri Lankan military says one of its operations in Trincomalee is aimed at reopening a waterway, which they say the Tigers have blocked as a way of depriving farmers of water on nearby government land.

The Tigers say local Tamils blocked the waterway as part of a protest for greater rights.

There have been an increasing number of violations of the four-year truce between the two sides in recent months, and observers fear this latest fighting threatens a return to full-scale war.
