The Norwegian peace envoy to Sri Lanka, Jon Hansson Bauer, has urged the Tamil Tiger rebels to reconsider their demand that ceasefire monitors from Denmark, Finland and Sweden withdraw from the international observer mission.

Speaking to the BBC, Bauer said all three countries were committed to the peace process in Sri Lanka.

No decision was taken at the talks in Norway to outline the future role of the mission, but Bauer said the peace monitors would continue their work as before. He added that the five countries which make up the mission Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden would withdraw their citizens if security could not be guaranteed.

The mission was thrown into crisis when Tamil Tiger rebels demanded the removal of observers from Denmark, Finland and Sweden in retaliation of an EU decision to list them as a terrorist organisation.
