Committed to our role - Norway
Norway remains committed to mediating in Sri Lanka's conflict, says peace envoy Jon Hanssen-Bauer. Bauer was speaking to the BBC after his government made clear that it planned no fresh initiatives following the collapse of planned peace talks between Sri Lanka's warring parties in Oslo last week. Bauer said, "We are committed to our role. But our role is to help the parties in steps they want to take in the peace process. “Only when they listen to our advice can we help. The peace process is their responsibility”, he said. He said the Norwegian government was still waiting for a written response from the Tamil Tigers guaranteeing the security of Scandinavian ceasefire monitors operating in Sri Lanka. “We expect a formal response by the 20th of June", Bauer said. Government has assured its commitment to provide security to the monitors and said that they did not want a change in the composition. Both the island's government and Tamil rebels say they are still committed to the 2002 truce, despite frequent breaches.
