The government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) have appointed Dr. Palitha Kohona as the head of delegation to the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The GoSL delegation is to discuss the safety of the international truce monitors on 8-9 June with the Tamil Tigers. After meeting President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Colombo, Norwegian International Development Minister Erik Solheim has suggested last week that the parties meet to assess the security situation and safety of the truce monitors. LTTE response The GoSL has once again assured its support to the Sri Lanka monitoring Mission (SLMM) manned by Nordic monitors. “The President and the GoSL greatly appreciates the commitment and the services of the SLMM,” a government press release said adding that it is responding “positively” to the proposed meeting. The issue was raised after the Tamil Tigers attempted to attack Pearl Cruise II vessel with over 700 security personnel and international monitors. The Tamil Tigers are yet to confirm whether they attend the meeting. The GoSL says it would like to encourage the LTTE to attend the proposed meeting. Dr. Kohona is the Secretary General of the Secretariat for Coordinated the Peace Process (SCOPP). | LOCAL LINKS Co-Chairs 'LTTE trumpet'31 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya 'carrot and stick' approach by donors30 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya EU ban LTTE30 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya Norway talks 'depend upon EU ban'28 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya Norway warns of 'difficult' future26 May, 2006 | Sandeshaya | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
