Political parties have expressed support to President Rajapaksa
Major political parties in Sri Lanka have expressed their fullest support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa after a suicide bomb blast injured the country’s top military commander.

The fourth session of the All Party Conference (APC) held on Friday offered support to the Head of State “at this decisive moment,” a government statement said.

All political parties represented in Parliament, other than the TNA, participated in this session of the APC.

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) has once again stressed the need for a negotiated solution for Sri Lanka’s national question.

UNP deputy leader Karu Jayasuriya said the party would extend the fullest support to the President without engaging in any narrow politics.

The image of our country is being destroyed. They show the world that the one act that we took to ensure our security, when faced with a major attack, was much bigger than the thousands of times the LTTE had grossly and provocatively violated the ceasefire agreement

Describing the attack on General Sarath Fonseka as “the gravest truce violation,” President Rajapaksa said however the government has acted with calm without being dragged into LTTE provocations.

“At that most critical of moments, I did not at any stage forget the unity that existed among us. I appreciate very much the cooperation extended by you all, having no consideration about party differences at those crucial hours” the President said.

President Rajapaksa has accused certain media of helping the Tamil Tigers in their “propaganda war”.

“The image of our country is being destroyed. They show the world that the one act that we took to ensure our security, when faced with a major attack, was much bigger than the thousands of times the LTTE had grossly and provocatively violated the ceasefire agreement,” he said.

Rajapaksa’s political ally, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has also supported his policy of patience “although the JVP was not advocating patience in the search for peace”.
