More killings in the North East
The worsening violence in Sri Lanka has claimed more lives. Police have found the bodies of five people with gunshot wounds in the northern town of Jaffna. No group has said it carried out the killings. Several people were injured in mine attacks in the north-western district of Mannar and hours later in the northern town of Vavuniya. The Norwegian special envoy, Jan Hanssen-Bauer, has met the Sri Lankan prime minister, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, but no details have emerged. The envoy is due to meet the rebels in Kilinochchi on Thursday. Meanwhile nearly 1000 people have left their homes in Trincomalee, following almost two weeks of violence. Ethnic tensions are running high after a series of bomb attacks in the eastern town. The government has blamed Tamil Tiger rebels. A curfew is now in place.
