The Sri Lankan military says suspected Tamil Tiger rebels have blown up one of their own boats to prevent it being searched by the navy.

Six suspected rebels are reported to have been killed in the blast and eight Sri Lankan sailors are missing.

A military spokesman said a naval gunboat was approaching the vessel, a trawler, (off the coast of Mannar) when it blew up.

The blast also sank the gunboat. The spokesman said at least ten sailors were rescued by local fishermen.
