Anura Slams Mahinda JVP alliance

Electoral agreements between Presidential Candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Sinhala Nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna came under heavy criticism by Anura Bandaranaike.

The prime minister designate in a future United People Alliance government says that policies agreed with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna by (JVP) Mahinda Rajapaksa is in "total contrast" with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Policies.

Speaking to journalists in Colombo on Monday after a long absence from the country, foreign minister Anura Bandaranaike said that it is against the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) policy to oppose devolution of power.

The SLFP is the major party in a Sinhala majority alliance that is campaigning to make Rajapaksa the fifth president of the country.

Anura Bandaranaike nominated by the SLFP as the PM under a Rajapaksa presidency was a guest among the invited few who witnessed the signing of the Mahinda-JVP electoral pact in Colombo in early September.

Moves to abolish the proposed Post Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-Toms) in the Mahinda-JVP agreement also came under heavy fire from Bandaranaike.

The P-TOMS agreement was signed between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers in June.

The implementation of The P-TOMS agreement has been already stayed by the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka after the JVP challenged it in courts.

Both electoral pacts by Rajapaksa with the JVP as well as the Buddhist monk led Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) pledges to abolish the P-TOMS agreement.

Bandaranaike stressed that the P-TOMS has to be implemented to provide relief to the tsunami affected without racial discrimination.

Pointing out that it was the PM himself who tabled the P-TOMS bill in parliament the foreign minister said that the policies agreed between the JVP and the PM, amounts to "declaring war," against the Tamil Tigers.

"We will have to abolish these agreements that harm the country and the nation," added Bandaranaike.
