Protesters in Maradamunai demanded speed resettlement
More than two thousand tsunami victims launched a protest in Marandamunai in northern Ampara saying the government is not acting to provide them with housing.

The protesters claimed the government should take immediate action to build permanent housing for the tsunami victims from the area.

The area was shut down by the protesters causing severe disruption.

In an interview with the BBC Sandeshaya, the District Secretary Herath Abeyweera said,

Two years to resettle
It can even take up to two years to complete the rebuilding of houses or even flats for the displaced in this area

"When the restriction of 200 metres is introduced, one fifth of the population in the area will end up with nowhere to live. We are left with just two options. One is to fill the surrounding paddy fields and build houses in that land. The other is to redesign and reallocate land in the area between two and four hundred metre zone from the beach. We have already started work on this."

"In the Southern part of Ampara, we can build houses quickly. We have already allocated land for building," he said.

"In the northern areas, we have a problem of acquiring land. It can even take up to two years to complete the rebuilding of houses or even flats for the displaced in this area."
