One dead after riots in Jaffna

One person is reported to be dead and another wounded after the security forces opened fire at rioters in Jaffna. The protests erupted after an accidental death of a 12 year old girl.

"The 12-year-old girl was riding a bicycle to school when
she was hit by the military vehicle. The girl succumbed to her injuries while the Air Force was trying to airlift her to Colombo for treatment.", said the military spokesman Brig. Daya Ratnayake.

“large number of people gathered after the accident demanding the
driver be punished. Some threw stones at an air force
vehicle accompanying the army truck, and others burned
tires” Ratnayake said.

"Later, the LTTE instigated further violence" said the military sopkesman. "The mobs threw petrol bombs, set fire to two military bunkers and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party [SLFP] office in Jaffna town."

"Police had to baton charge to contain the situation. Later the riots got out of control, and the security forces had no choice but to open fire. One person was reported to be dead and another is wounded." said the Military spokesman.

Police arrested the driver, he said.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission said they had reports of one man dead and two wounded as a result of the riots.
