Curfew re-imposed in Trincomalee

Tension has been high in Trincomalee for some time
Chief of Defence Staff and Navy Commander Daya Sandagiri recommended that peace committees in Trincomalee should meet regularly and try to bring about normalcy.

Speaking to religious leaders of all faiths and civil leaders representing all communities in Trincomalee town Rear Admiral Sandagiri said “this is not a time to give into emotions.”

Daya Sandagiri accompanied by Army Commander Shantha Kottegoada arrived on Monday in troubled Trincomalee after tension heightened between the Sinhala and Tamil communities.

The police have decided to declare curfew again on Tuesday after a number of sporadic incidents of violence.

Sporadic violence

Curfew commenced within the Trincomalee town limits at 1700 SLT on Tuesday and is to be lifted at six in the morning on Wednesday.

A number of Tamil families living in the village of Sirimapura had fled there houses .Two of there dwellings used for fishing activities ware set on fire.

A tour guide from Kandy, identified as Sumith was abducted in the Uppuvali area on Monday and the police say that they have found his body dumped in a pool of mud in the Thorankadu area.

According to the police the deceased hands were tied from behind and head injuries were to be seen.

Unidentified gunman had shot a bus arriving from Vavuniya towards Trincomalee.

The incident took place in the Mihindupura area. According to a police spokesman although bullets had hit the bus no one was injured.
