BBC Sinhala Service output is mainly based on news and current affairs.
The daily programme begins with a ten minute round up of the international news of the day. The second segment of the programme
provides further analysis, interviews and reports on the current issues.
The programme is enhanced by contributions from many reporters from different corners of Sri Lanka, and expatriate analysts
from the Sri lankan Diaspora around the world. The wealth of material generated by BBC staff all over the world on international
affairs, is translated and presented for the benefit of the Sinhala listeners everywhere. Last portion of the programme is
devoted to a weekly feature.
Weekly Magazines
Monday "Makarandaya" - Alternative look at the world art scene. Debates and discussions about everything to do with art and artists.
New trends are discovered and old trends challenged. A popular lively programme on International and Sri Lankan art scene.
Thursday "Alokaya" - A beacon of knowledge to the darkest corners of the mind. What it isn't is a conventional science programme. New
and old beliefs challenged and discussed. A forum for ideas, discussions and debates. Alokaya is a programme which tries to
look at the world and beyond with a scientific approach rather than discussing the science related subjects.
Friday "Post Bag" - We receive hundreds of letters a week. This is the chance to share the criticisms and praises from the listener.
Different views are aired by listeners all over the world. The weekly competition in the post bag provides the opportunity
to our listeners to win several gifts from the BBC.
Saturday "Gee Mini Ara"- New look at the old songs. A ground breaking programme series which has inspired many radio programmes and
newspapers to imitate the format. Professor Sucharita Gamalath reviews the contemporary Sinhala song. A programme respected
by all professional musicians, lyrics writers and vocalists in Sri Lanka.
