BBC Singers: Tenors

Christopher Bowen
Christopher Bowen is a kiwi. In 1999 he toured Europe with the New Zealand Youth Choir and heard the BBC Singers sing Figure Humaine at a late night Prom. Four years later, he traded the outdoor lifestyle of Christchurch New Zealand for London. Christopher joined the Singers in 2005 and is the high boy of the tenor section. He contributes to the Bach cantata series at St Anne’s in the city. He enjoys his eight-minute commute to the office and longer walks when time allows.
Edward Goater
Edward Goater studied Ecology at university before turning to singing. His career has seen him perform all the major oratorio works both here and abroad including Evangelist in Stainer’s Crucifixion, Shutz's Christmas Story, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and St. John Passion, and on many occasions (including an invitation to Kenya) Britten’s St. Nicolas. His various opera invitations include the recently revived the role of Tallon in Dame Ethel Smyth's The Wreckers for Duchy Opera in November 2006. In his spare time Edward likes to hack a golf ball round the course.
Stephen Jeffes
Stephen Jeffes first sang as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral. He went on to read music at Bristol before returning to London. Having worked with many professional groups, Stephen joined the BBC Singers in 2006. He continues to enjoy a solo concert career and in his spare time, he likes to beat Chris at tennis and Neil at golf.
Robert Johnston
Robert Johnston started singing as a chorister in the choir of Salisbury Cathedral, and later studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He is a fanatical Chelsea supporter, enjoys playing cricket, and hacks his way around the odd golf course (with 2 or 3 old hacks from the BBC Singers!). He lives in Tring with his wife Angela, and sons Harvey and Jasper.
Neil MacKenzie
Neil MacKenzie is a Cambridge graduate and was a first-study pianist before concentrating on a singing career. He has enjoyed the twilight world of Maida Vale Studios for over 20 years, and has worked with four principal conductors of the BBC Singers, broadcast from various continents and sung a huge variety of repertoire both in the group and in his solo career. As well as running his own chamber choir, Voix de Vivre, Neil enjoys a spot of hill walking, with or without a golf club in hand.

Andrew Murgatroyd
Andrew Murgatroyd began singing while reading music at Lancaster University. He joined the Singers in 1986 and also maintains a career as oratorio soloist. To relax Andrew watches Rugby Union, strums sad seventies folk/rock on the guitar and researches his family history in deepest, dankest Yorkshire.
