Always book online
Some low cost airlines charge a premium for booking on the phone.

For links to websites and online ticketing for all airlines flying from Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool, see our air travel pages.

Book well in advance
With most low cost airlines the later you book the more you’ll pay.

Do you want a cheap flight home too?
Some return fares often cost more than the outbound ticket.

Be sure to check where you’re actually going
Some low cost airlines land at airports that can be a long way from your final destination.

Try to avoid weekends
Low cost airlines often charge more if you want to go way for the weekend.

Free tickets aren’t always free
If an airline says the fare is FREE, in most cases you still have to pay airport/local taxes and other charges. Always check!

Travel off-peak and get the best deals
Early morning, middle of the day or late night flights are often have the cheapest fares.

Going to a ski destination?
Check how much they’ll charge to carry your skis. Conventional airlines often carry them FREE. Low cost airlines rarely do.

Baggage allowances
If you go over the weight of your baggage allowances some low cost airlines will charge you more than you think for additional kilograms.

Don’t forget to try the conventional airlines
Many conventional airlines like British Airways sometimes offer cheaper fares than low cost carriers.
