1950's
India forms the backdrop for this Bollywood drama. Abhishek
Bachchan plays the lead role of Gurukant Desai, a young ambitious Gujarati boy
with an excessive urge to make it big.
His journey to the top begins in Turkey. It's
here that he quickly works his way up the career ladder before deciding to go
on his own. He
marries Sujata (Aishwarya Rai), his best friend's sister, so as to use the dowry,
as part of the business capital. He
moves to Mumbai with his wife and brother-in-law. But
it is not long before Guru realises the painful truth behind the real business
world. Despite
many barriers, he starts his company, Shakti Trading and in no time revels in
its success.
But Nanaji (Mithun), a newspaper publisher soon learns about Guru's devious schemes
of reaching to the top. So
with the help of Shyam (Madhavan), his Editor, he decides to expose the truth
behind Guru's success.
This
movie is director Mani Ratnma's finest work to date. Guru's rise to success is
not shown in great detail. Mani
prefers to show Guru's achievements through A. R Rahman's brilliant musical score
which helps the film to move at a faster pace.
Abhishek's portrayal of the character from a young energetic lad to an old but
courageous entrepreneur facing the court enquiry set up by the government is sure
to win him awards this year. He
is ably aided by his leading lady, Aishwarya whose on-screen chemistry with Abhishek
is simply electrifying. She
is Guru's pillar of strength in his hour of need. With
the latest news announcing Abhishek Bachchan's engagement to Aishwarya Rai, Guru
is bound to be a box office winner. Not to be missed! Reviewed
