One
such case was that of a humble farmer, Gurshan (Gurdaas Maan), to
whom tilling his soil meant so much to him.
He
did this for a living which fed his small family consisting of his
mother (Tej Kaur), father (Gurdev Singh)and a young bubbly sister
Guddi (Divya Dutta).
Surviving
through the social unrest, the family saw some ups and downs and
destiny added another member into their lives - Gurshan gets married
to Jassi (Juhi Chawla), a pampered daughter of a police officer.
Things
starts to look up for this humble family and with time the old wounds
heal and pains forgotten.
And
then comes the fateful night and that knock on their door which
changes their entire lives forever.

Gurdas and Juhi in Des
Hoyaa Pardes

A man
who believed in patriotism now looses all his faith as his family
is forced to separate.
But
most of all Guddi is left with unfulfilled dreams.
A family
who was just a spectator of the oppression and it's unjust ways,
now becomes one of it's victims.
Des
Hoyaa Pardes portrays the suffering of hundreds of people driven
by emotional turmoil or discrimination in the 1980's.
They
are forced to seek political asylum in countries abroad. But little
did they realise the tragic consequences of taking such a step.
Cut
off from their families, chased by their governments and not accepted
by the western culture, these people undergo tremendous suffering.
This
film captures not only the raw beauty of the Punjab life but also
the pain and suffering of these people as they search for a better
life abroad.
