| This
spooky horror is reminiscent of The Gift which starred Cate
Blanchett and Keanu Reeves.
Rakht
revolves around Drishti (Bipasha), a young widow. She has the gift
of reading tarot cards and seeing into the future.
People
who come for her help include Riya (Neha Dupia), who is abused by
her husband, Sunny (Dino Morea). But when Drishti advises Riya to
leave him, Sunny begins to threaten her.
Then
there is Natasha (Amrita Arora). She is engaged to Rahul (Sanjay
Dutt). He happens to be the headmaster of the school that Drishti's
eight year old son attends.
But
one day, a shocked Drishti catches Natasha with another man during
a party. A few days later, Natasha goes missing. The police are
unable to find her. So Rahul turns to Drishti for help.
The
third character in this chilling story is Mohit (Suniel Shetty),
a crazy car mechanic who has had an unstable childhood. He is smitten
by Drishti's beauty.
So
where is Natasha? Is the man whom Drishti saw, responsible for her
disappearance? What about the abused wife? Will she be able to liberate
herself from her aggressive husband?
Most
of all, will Drishti be able to solve their problems? Rakht
meaning 'blood' has the answers.
The
film flows at a steady pace during the first half as we get introduced
to all the characters and their personal problems. It only picks
up after the intermission.
Director
Mahesh Manjrekar has done a good job. He has mixed the horror with
a mystery. It is not easy to guess who is responsible for Natasha's
disappearance.
The
truth is inevitably revealed towards the end of the film. When Drishti
finds out the identity of the suspect and when the suspect learns
that he is exposed, one would expect a showdown with some gripping
moments. But this is simply missing. What we are left with is an
unwelcome anticlimax.
Since
this is a spooky celluloid horror, it has all the necessary ingredients
to make you jump in your seat. But that only happens in isolated
parts of the film.
Rakht
excels on the technical front. The musical score further enhances
the suspense of the film.
The cinematography is superb with great special effects which blends
very well with the setting of a horror movie.
Suniel
Shetty and Sunil Dutt play their parts well.
Dino Morea is very good. His portrayal of a volatile character will
go down well with the audience.
But
the film belongs to Bipasha Basu. She has finally proven with Rakht
that she is capable of portraying an intense and complex character
like Drishti with confidence.
I must
not forget to mention Abhishek Bachchan in a special appearance.
He looks great in the song One Love.
On
the whole, Rakht will appeal to audiences who are keen on
horror flicks. This will affect its fate at the box office despite
its glossy look.
