Middway between Wales and Ireland and the Irish Sea looked as calm as a millpond.

It was clear that the decision to delay the launch until 4.00am Monday morning had been a smart one.

Simon eventually made it to Dublin at 10.00pm, after 18 hours of paddling.

One of Simon's friends, Phil Clegg was providing some welcome companionship during this stage of the crossing. Both enjoyed the remarkably calm conditions.

Meanwhile, support van driver Craig Burton had made it across on the ferry and was waiting for them in Dublin.
