Listener
Eddie Humphreys of Westbury won the Gardening Programmes Perpetual
Cup in a competition which has taken place over several rounds during
recent weeks.
He
was presented with the cup during the show after reading out his
winning entry on air.
The
competition started last November when listeners were invited to
take part in several consecutive weekly competitions and Eddies
correct answers in the preliminary rounds qualified him to enter
the final round.
This
asked listeners to select their six best plants for a stunning Shropshire
summer cottage garden. Entrants were also allowed ten words to say
why each choice had been made.
Presenter
Alan Wilding said: "We set our cup entrants the challenge of
sending us some advice of their own. We broadcast these entries
over recent weeks before my colleague Martin Ford and I got down
to the difficult task of deciding a winner. Eddies entry,
impressed both of us with its display potential and enthusiastic
reasons."
Martin
Ford added: "Eddies choice will provide perfume, height
of display and a long summer season of interest."
During
a previous Gardening Programme listeners had shared the winning
moment with Eddie Humphreys when Alan Wilding phoned him,
live on air.
Alan
said: "It turned out to have been a big week for Eddie because
pictures of his garden had just been published in a national gardening
newspaper."
In
addition to the cup Eddie received a certificate signed by the programmes
resident gardening duo, some Radio Shropshire gingerbread, several
recently published gardening books and a slug pub trap
and tickets to talk by tv gardener Gay Search.
