Ramayana – The holy book

The holy book, Ramayana, meaning life-story of Rama, is one of the greatest epics of the Hindu religion.

First written by the great sage Valmiki around the 4th century B.C., Ramayana tells the story of Lord Rama. He is supposed to have lived in the 8th century B.C.

This holy book is recited as a poem and has passed down to the present day by word of mouth.

Ramayana was originally written in Sanskrit, the ancient Hindu scripture. But it was later written in Hindi poetry by Saint Tulsi Das, under the title of Ramcharitmanas.

It is composed of verses called Sholkas which in turn make up chapters called Sargas.

A group of Sargas together form a book called Kandas. There are 7 Kandas or books which make up the Ramayana.
Illustrated versions of Ramayana
Illustrated versions of Ramayana prove very popular with young children
The story of Lord Rama as told in the great epic Ramayana is one that most Indians know irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

Today many simplified and illustrated versions of Ramayana are available for young children.

These books, not only provide interesting bed- time reading but act as a source of inspiration on Hinduism at an early age.
