Kathak
is the most popular classical dance style of North India.
Its name is derive from the sanskrit words ‘story’ and ‘making’
which literally means ‘the telling of stories’ by means of
dance.
The
stories performed in Kathak come from the Indian literature,
Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
The
dancer represents all the characters in the story with the
help of a repertoire of gestures, facial expressions and graceful
movements of the body and feet.
Kathak
is performed by both male and female dancers.
The
performance of Kathak consists of two parts, Nritta and Nritya.
Nritta
– Here the body movements of the dancer flows with the rhythm
of the music.
Nritya
– this part of Kathak involves the explanation of a story
or a song through facial expressions, gestures of the hands
and symbolic postures of the body.
With
Kathak, the dancer does not have to stick to the story. The
artist is allowed more body freedom thus interpreting the story
using his or her own imagination and creativity. |
